Summary

A transgender teen named Ryuu finds an escape from the expectations and anxieties of his daily life in the world of street fashion。 This personal, heartfelt, fictional story from a Japanese transgender manga creator made waves in Japan and will inspire readers all over the world!

High schooler Ryuu knows he's transgender。 But he doesn't have anyone to confide in about the confusion he feels。 He can't tell his best friend, who he's secretly got a crush on, and he can't tell his mom, who's constantly asking why Ryuu is always dressing like a boy。 He certainly can't tell Jin, the new transfer student who looks like just another bully。 The only time Ryuu feels at ease is when he's wearing his favorite clothes。 Then, and only then, the world melts away, and he can be his true self。 One day, while out shopping, Ryuu sees an unexpected sight: Jin。 The kid who looked so tough in class is shopping for the same clothes that Ryuu loves。 And Jin offers Ryuu a proposal: to start their own brand and create apparel to help everyone feel comfortable in their skin。 At last, Ryuu has someone he can open up to--and the journey ahead might finally give him a way to express himself to everyone else。

Interesting story hook, with good character concepts allover, but lacking a bit in momentum for me to really know where I'll place it as a whole。 Will read one more volume and hope things pick up! ARC via Netgalley。 !!!!!!!! Absolutely unique, and highly recommended, although the art style is not my personal cup of tea。 (It's very good art, to be clear, that is a completely taste-based assessment。) Transmasc characters in manga are vanishingly rare, and I genuinely can't think of any other transcmasc creators at all, so I hope that this series will end up on library shelves across the country for that reason alone, but so far it's also a really endearing friendship narrative and I'm inter ARC via Netgalley。 !!!!!!!! Ryo was born a female, but he’s a guy through and through。 Except he’s still in high school so he’s trapped in hell AND a body he doesn’t want。 When the very free spirited Jin arrives in his class, Ryo doesn’t think much of it, but Jin might be his ticket to finally being able to express himself。Okay, there is the often-sought but rarely seen Mark Manga Moment (tm) at the end of Chapter 1 in the form of a piece of art Ryo creates that just oozes with style and expressiveness and is just this glo Ryo was born a female, but he’s a guy through and through。 Except he’s still in high school so he’s trapped in hell AND a body he doesn’t want。 When the very free spirited Jin arrives in his class, Ryo doesn’t think much of it, but Jin might be his ticket to finally being able to express himself。Okay, there is the often-sought but rarely seen Mark Manga Moment (tm) at the end of Chapter 1 in the form of a piece of art Ryo creates that just oozes with style and expressiveness and is just this glorious artistic representation of how he feels about his body。 Loved it - it’s one of the most striking images I’ve seen in a manga for a while。In fact, it inspires Jin to rope Ryo into starting a fashion brand, which sure isn’t where I thought this was going but it makes for a really interesting story。 My biggest complaint for this turn is that the aforementioned brilliant piece isn’t the focus of their first shirt。 I like what they go with, but Ryo’s astonishing art just grabs the reader in a way that the more low-key design they’re selling simply cannot。Our two leads are pretty interesting。 I think Ryo’s great and a strong example of good representation (having the book written by a transgender author undoubtedly helps this); his struggles and outbursts feel very reasonable for somebody who’s facing such a difficult path with so few people he can rely on。 He’s lashing out, life is tough, but he is easy to root for。And while Jin doesn’t always get it right, he certainly tries really hard and I like that he’s not exactly perfect (although he might still be a bit TOO exactly what Ryo needs)。 He’s just doing his own thing and the confidence he imbues that with rubs off on Ryo。 They’ve got a strong friendship brewing (although running a business should provide its own set of headaches)。 I also like how they’re very non-conformist and the book doesn’t fault them for it - the message about how important it is to find the strength to be yourself is very clear。I also appreciated the extensive notes and interview at the back。 It’s a little earnest, what with it imploring any readers who are binding to do so safely and such, but better to be too helpful than not。 Lots of good explanations for the way things were translated and how the book is respecting the subject matter。 The interview made me want a whole autobiographical work on the creator as well and I rarely even bother reading interviews。If this book has a failing (besides the fact that I don’t love the art a whole bunch), it definitely comes from the characters。 The plot may be unique, but the good characters are good and the bad ones are bad and you can kind of suss everybody out without a lot of nuance (our lead bad dude is the by-the-numbers token trash rich male)。 It’s still good storytelling - the camera guy gets a surprising hand from his parents that I really found touching - but you aren’t going to have any shocking turns here。 To refute my own complaints, I did like that at least some of the students are more open-minded than others and there’s one decent teacher on the staff。And, okay, maybe that one girl who is kind of hot for Ryo and seems to not be concerned about his choices and might be accepting? Then again, that might be getting left in the dust if the preview is anything to be believed。4。5, but I’m holding back because I want more from this and I want to see where it’s heading。 It’s close to perfect and feels important and is telling a story that doesn’t always get handled well。 Definitely recommended。 。。。more

It’s hard being transgender in Japan。Just as Ryo who is struggling to be himself when everyone around him thinks he’s weird or out of place。 He’s the nail that sticks up, and in Japan, the nail that sticks up gets hammered down。But things start to change when Jin, a cool older student, is forced to repeat a year。 At first Ryo thinks Jin will be like everyone else, but Jin sees him and more。。。 accepts him。 Jin thinks that Ryo is cool, has good taste, and is the perfect person to form a clothing b It’s hard being transgender in Japan。Just as Ryo who is struggling to be himself when everyone around him thinks he’s weird or out of place。 He’s the nail that sticks up, and in Japan, the nail that sticks up gets hammered down。But things start to change when Jin, a cool older student, is forced to repeat a year。 At first Ryo thinks Jin will be like everyone else, but Jin sees him and more。。。 accepts him。 Jin thinks that Ryo is cool, has good taste, and is the perfect person to form a clothing brand with him。Huh。。。 I guess boys really do run the riot。 Hmm。。。 that sounds like a pretty cool brand name。 ~_^--Boys Run the Riot is an #OwnVoices manga written by a transgender mangaka that has honestly one of the best representations of what LBGTQIA+ life is like in Japan。It’s also got some of the most gorgeous and amazing art I’ve ever seen in manga。 The character design is so well done。 But even more than that the sheer amount of detail and thought put into every panel is honestly stellar。 The very first panel setting the scene in a subway station is so incredibly accurate that you can actually pinpoint which subway station it is from the details。The whole manga is like this。 Not necessarily in color。。。 but the artwork is so beautiful。。 so in depth and filled with so much meaning。 It’s on par with the art that was in Spider-man Into the Spider-verse。。。 There’s an absolutely beautiful piece of graffiti that Ryo does that quite frankly brought tears to my eyes。Like it’s so, so very good。I mean, just look at the cover。 All of the art inside is like that, just in black and white。 The way the clothing is rendered。 The graffiti on the walls。 The shift in clothing depending on what’s in the background。 It’s honestly amazing art。And that matters。But what matters more is the beauty and relatability of Ryo。 Ryo feels real。 He feels true。 He’s got flaws and foibles but he’s also lovable and caring and has an inner-resilience that makes me want to give him a hug and tell him he’s valid。 But I don’t need to, because he’s got an amazing ally and friend in Jin。 I feel that all of us need a Jin in our lives。 A friend who wants to be with us because they think we’re cool and want us to live our best lives。 A friend who will accept us for who we are。 A friend who will call us out on our B。S。 A friend who wants you to be honest with them because they’ll be honest with you。 A friend who will forgive you when you mess up。Seriously we need a Jin。What Jin and Ryo have is a true bromance。。。 not a romance。 Ryo has a crush on his other friend, Chika, who is a little weird herself but she owns it。 I appreciated the realities that some teachers will care about their students while others will not。 It was nice to see that represented。 This manga also really hits what it’s like to be transgender in a fairly sexist society。 Because, let’s face it。。。 Japan is pretty darn sexist。。。 worse than the United States。 Whereas in the states it’s okay to have friends of all genders, it’s less okay in Japan。 Especially as teens。 It’s hard to be a transgender teen anywhere。 It’s hard to be transgender in Japan 。And that struggle is really well represented here。 Even if it can be hard to read at times。 There are some other content warnings that people should be aware of: CW: Transphobia, Homophobia, Sexism, Misogyny。 Gender Dysphoria, physical violence (teacher on student), bullying。 I also really appreciated the author interview at the back of the manga。 The fact that the cover was created specifically for the English release is kind of cool to know。 BTW read the liner notes at the end。 Seriously。 Read the liner notes。 There’s some really great information there。 A+ for the publisher for doing this。This manga is stellar。 Magnificent。 More people need to know about it。Seriously。。。 read this。Five StarsI received an ARC of this manga via NetGalley 。。。more

The author himself is trans, and it really reflects in the story。 I loved the bonds between Ryo and his friends, and I found it really interesting how much detail was put into the opening of their business! (Between this and all the small business tiktoks I get on my fyp, it's making me want to open my own。。。) The character development for Ryo as he moved through the story was paced quite well, and it was clear how Jin's acceptance of him really helped him grow into his own。 I also loved how fashion was utilized as a form of self-expression in this story。 Clothing can be super important to people, and it's recently become very important to me, so I think I read this as just the right time。 I can't wait to read the next volume! 。。。more

This was such a good first volume! Not only is it lovely to see trans rep in manga, the story itself is already intriguing which is very promising。 Ryo's feelings as a trans teenager are very relatable and how all the characters' friendships are formed feels realistic and not forced at all。 The writing is not tedious to read at all and despite not being into fashion or photography, I didn't feel left behind or bored! The art, itself, is also lovely。 I enjoyed everything about this!5/5 stars! This was such a good first volume! An unlikely group of highschool boys follow their passion and begin their journey of starting a clothing brand。 Ryuu struggles with his dysphoria and be friends Jin who is confident and loud。 The story follows Ryuu being a boy but others don’t see him that way。 Jin, like others, didn’t know Ryuu was a boy and when Ryuu expresses he is one Jin agrees and assesses him as such。 First volume is a good read so far looking forward to the series。

Promising series! I unfortunately don't have a ton to say about it yet。 The story is very straightforward - Ryo, a trans boy, has no one to confide in about his gender identity until Jin, the new kid in class, shows up。 The two become friends after accidentally running into each other at an alternative clothing store and decide to start a brand together。The author includes some mild bullying and offhand comments but doesn't spend too much time dragging the trans character through it。 And there a Promising series! I really enjoyed reading this manga。 I thought that the idea of it was original。 A trans guy who isn't out yet who only feels at home in themselves when they are wearing the clothing they feel confident in starts a clothing brand with an unlikely partner from school。 The anger that comes with the dysphoria is something I have read about many times in other stories but I like how in this one, they channel their emotions into something that they are creating。 It is really neat。 Give it a shot。 I really enjoyed reading this manga。 I thought that the idea of it was original。 A trans guy who isn't out yet who only feels at home in themselves when they are wearing the clothing they feel confident in starts a clothing brand with an unlikely partner from school。 The anger that comes with the dysphoria is something I have read about many times in other stories but I like how in this one, they channel their emotions into something that they are creating。 It is really neat。 Give it a shot。 。。。more

This is the first volume in a new series following a transgender teen who feels like he can't show the world who he is and with help from a new classmate, learns to express himself through helping create a clothing brand。I really loved the characters in this。 Not only do we get to know Ryuu and his emotions, especially in relation to having to present as female in school, but we're getting to know his friendships with Jin and another student introduced near the end of the volume。 I love how real This is the first volume in a new series following a transgender teen who feels like he can't show the world who he is and with help from a new classmate, learns to express himself through helping create a clothing brand。I really loved the characters in this。 Not only do we get to know Ryuu and his emotions, especially in relation to having to present as female in school, but we're getting to know his friendships with Jin and another student introduced near the end of the volume。 I love how real everyone feels, which is probably helped by this being an own voices story from the author。 I also loved that there was an interview included in the back。I can't wait to read more of this story。Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing the E-ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I loved this every single step of the way。This book follows Trans boy Ryoko Watari but he's not out yet。 He struggles with identity issues and navigating with his individuality as a whole。Things change when he meets cringey af, fashionista and totally oblivious (sometimes) Jin Sato。 They have an instant connection, a platonic one and then together they start a fashion brand。They employ Watari's art skills(mainly graffiti but works with clothes as well。) and Jin's not so good marketing skills。 Friends are made along the line and things are discovered。I loved this book so much。 I finished it in one sitting and to be honest, nothing can beat own voices books! A quick read and a great coming of age story。 I can not wait for volume two!To every transgender individual out there, you're completely valid!
